" Trick Or Treat " " Mama, " the little girl called piling into the den, " I can't get my wings straight ! " Her mother glided into the room from the kitchen. She was wiping her hands. The light momentarily glistened and twinkled off of her left hand, and her daughter stopped, transfixed. It wasn't the first time she stared in awe at her mother. Her mother was beautiful, that much she knew. And she knew she was different from other mothers. She'd never seen other mothers with metal patches inside of them. And they had never scared her. They just made up who her mother was, and she accepted that. " Mama, my wings ! " A slight smile tugged at the corner of her mother's mouth. " There is no need to worry Erin, " she replied, " They are merely off by a centimeter. " " But they have to be perfect ! Can you help me fix them, " she asked, her big blue eyes staring up in wonder. " Of course, " she answered, adjusting the wings, " There, they are now straight. " Erin glanced in the mirror, " Now they're perfect. Thank you Mama. " " You're welcome, " she answered smiling reassuringly. The smile melted Erin. She loved her mother so much but didn't always know how to express it. Sometimes her mother seemed so serious, and other times not. But one thing was sure, thought Erin, she was a great mother. Her smiles always brightened her day. She flashed one back at her mother, and just then heard a loud cackle. Both Erin and her mother spun around startled. The man stood crouched in the doorway. His hair was slicked back and gelled down and he wore a black cape which he had pulled across his powdered white face. Only his deep brown eyes showed through. " Ay vahnt to sauk your blooahd, " he cried, pulling the cape from his face and flashing a set of sharp canine teeth. Erin erupted in giggles and even her mother managed a chuckled as the man picked her up and whirled her around in a circle. Her mother watched with amusement etched on her features. " Papa, " Erin exclaimed, " do you think I look pretty ? " " I think you're always pretty, " her replied kissing her forehead and setting her down. He straightened out and shared a brief kiss with her mother which made little Erin giggled slightly. " Now, how are my two favorite ladies ? " " Ready to participate in the festivities. " " That's my Annika, " he smiled, " What about you , munchkin ? " " I'm all ready. But Papa, " she said, her brow creasing in concern, " Mama doesn't have a costume on. " Annika bit back the small subconscious voice that needled her to explain that costumes were irrelevant and holidays were frivolous human endeavors. She had resolved that side of her , that small voice ; several years ago when she first came to Earth, when she married her wonderful husband, and especially when she gave birth to her daughter. Yet even still, that voice from the past lived with her, trying at times to creep through. " I will attend the festivities in the attire I am wearing now. It is the attire worn by someone your father and I used to know. " Her husband smiled lightly, reminiscing. He remembered that woman. It was the woman he first fell in love with. She hadn't changed, she was the same woman, but yet, different ; somehow. More open. All he knew was that he loved her as much now as he did then. " Do I know her , " Erin asked her parents. " You met her a long time ago, Munchkin. " " Her name was Seven Of Nine, " Annika said, " she was me. " " Is that what you looked like when daddy first met you, " Erin asked gesturing to the form fitting jumpsuit and the French twist hairstyle. Her parents shared an amused glance before she answered, " Not exactly. When Harry, " she corrected herself, " when your father and I first met my attire was slightly different. More cumbersome. " " Oh, " Erin nodded, pretending she knew what the word ' cumbersome ' meant. Finally, she brightened, " Then if you're already wearing your costume, let's go. I can't wait to bob for apples. I love going over to Uncle Tom and Aunt B'Elanna's house. It's always fun, and I love the candy Uncle Tom always gives me. Do you think Aunt B'Elanna will like my angel costume ? " Harry smiled affectionately as Annika ushered their daughter to prepare to leave as Erin peppered her with question after question. " You may not ingest too much candy this evening, Erin. I do not wish for you to become ill. " " Uncle Tom never gets sick, and he eats lots of candy. " " He is a grown adult with a larger stomach than yours. " " I think Aunt B'Elanna will love your costume, " Harry said redirecting the conversation, " I mean, you're giving me a toothache, " he teased. " That's because I'm so cute, " she giggled, " Trick or Treat, " she yelped, tossing a popcorn ball at Harry. It bounced off his belly and he crouched down , ready to pounce. He popped the plastic fangs back into his mouth and moved toward her, " I looove Angel blooahd. Let me sauk your blooahd ! " Erin yelped again and scrambled out the door, with Harry hot on her heels. Annika chuckled slightly, and took one last look around their home. She picked up Erin's plastic jack o' lantern that she'd forgotten in her haste out of the house. " Computer, dim the lights to 15 percent illumination and seal the door after I am through, authorization Pi - Seven - Alpha. " The computer chirped its understanding as Annika stepped through the door and followed her family into the night. The End.
